Tiny, Ungrounded Things

MEET ARTIST SHAUNA EVE.
Shauna on Shauna:
"Always having been one to look under rocks both figurative and physical,I choose ocean creatures as playfulsubjects to illustrate human observations. My heart is international. My influences are mostly imaginary"
This girl kind of makes you want to throw it all away, huh? I had a chance to catch up with her after her first solo show at the Lut Boutique here in Vancouver, and she's every bit as lovely as her artwork. See for yourself~

Cargoh Culture: Hi Shauna, how are you?
Shauna Eve: Soooooo Good!
CC: Tiny Ungrounded Things is your first Solo Exhibition - how does that feel?
SE: Really great. It was a bit of a birthing process, you don't know exactly what you’re going to end up with. This little show wanted to be, so I set it free with the help of some amazing people.

CC: What was your source of inspiration for this show? And also, can you talk about where you find your inspiration in general?
SE: Letting go, trusting the winds of change, and following your instincts with tongue in cheek, those were the inspiration for my series. Each piece is really an elaborate though bubble to be honest...
[I find inspiration through] keeping an open heart, reading a ton,the ocean, travel, soul fish that cross my path. I can’t take credit for all my ideas though, sometimes they sneak up on me while I’m biking, drinking tea with friends, or tootling around my house. When that happens I have to run and story board it before I forget.
CC: What really turns off your creativity?
SE: Not being creative. Seriously. Sometimes you have to just sit down and doodle even when you don’t feel it. . . .Also Red Onions make me furious, and uncreative. Thanks a lot Red Onions. . .
CC: Yeah, I agree red onions are one of the many faces of evil. By the way, what did you have for breakfast?
SE: Two tins of sardines and toast.
CC: Uh…Yum? …moving along…how come "tiny, ungrounded, things?" Where did the title come from?
SE: Sometimes I feel like I’m floating along in a current. It’s funny to me to think of creatures outside their elements. tiny, ungrounded, things . . . their tiny flailing movements a mimicry of the filaments of thought that try so hard to reach out for answers.

CC: Which is your favourite piece in this exhibition? (I know, I'm sorry, it’s like asking which baby you like the best, but even parents have their favourites right?)
SE: 'pfffft!' is my favorite, because like most of my favorite things/experiences/friends, I made him by accident.
CC: Now to take a closer look at Miss Shauna, tell me what is an average Sunday for you?
SE: Most Sundays I’m grooming dogs which is pretty fun. Or if the day is all mine, then sleep in. Have breakfast with friends, and bike to the beach with vino and snacks.
CC: Where do you buy your veggies?
SE: In the teeny shops on bute and jervis in the west end, where I live
CC: Paper or plastic?
SE: Neither, the till boys laugh at me because I always forget to bring my reusable bag, but I hate putting more plastic in the ocean, so I juggle my purchases all the way home.
CC: What was the best day ever?
SE: Its hard to pick one. Horseback riding in the mountains of Costa Rica was a pretty big win with the little girl in me though.

CC: Tequila, beer or wine?
SE: Scotch. Glenfiddich 12 on the rocks
CC: Nice. Ok so finally, what are your final words of inspiration? Like, if you had your own advice column, what would it say?
SE: "You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm" -Colette
